Bedtime is a very special time for Ben and Meg. They each take a bath. While Meg takes her bath, Daddy plays recorder with Ben. Ben loves his special time with his dad. Ben likes to watch Daddy’s fingers when he plays recorder. “Remember to cover the holes or you will squeak,” says Daddy. Ben tries hard to cover the holes.
“Blow softly, toot, toot, toot. If you blow hard, it will squeak,” says Daddy. “Watch my fingers. We are ready to begin.”
Daddy played “Hot Cross Buns,” an old song Ben knew from first grade. Daddy wanted to play an easy song to begin. Ben squeaked a few times but Daddy said he thought he did a good job. Chip didn’t like it very much when Ben played the recorder. It made him bark because it hurt his ears. Mother took Chip downstairs. Daddy and Ben played two more songs and then it was time for Ben to take his bath.
Meg wanted Daddy to do something special with her, so they sang “Hot Cross Buns” and “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and some of her other favorite songs.
Soon Ben finished his bath and it was time for a story. Ben sat on one side of Daddy, with Meg on the other, and they listened to the story. Chip sat on the floor and listened too. Tonight Daddy read about a robin named Jolly. Tomorrow Ben will write a story about Jolly in his main lesson book and Meg will draw a picture of him.
It was time for Daddy to carry Meg to her bed. She had fallen asleep while he read. Daddy kissed Ben good night and put Meg into her bed. He kissed her good night, too.
Jan and Bob talked about their day and how wonderful it was to have their children homeschool. They wanted to share so much with them. But they didn’t quite know what to do with Chip. He was a pretty lively puppy and sure got into a lot of trouble!
