Today Ben and Meg are at Dr. Pat’s office. Dr. Pat is a dentist and he shows people how to take good care of their teeth. It is fun to go to his office. Meg loves to look at the fish in the waiting room. There are so many different kinds of fish; big ones, little ones, pretty ones and dull ones. Meg’s favorite fish is the angel fish. “Mother,” she asked, “can we have an angel fish?”
Mother said, “I will think about it. Who will clean the fish tank and feed them every day?”
“I will, I promise,” said Meg.
“Maybe we can stop by the pet store on the way home and see how much they cost,” Mother said. Meg was very excited.
The nurse came out to the waiting room to get Meg. She took her to the big chair and Meg climbed up. The nurse pumped the pedal so the chair rose higher and higher. Meg thought this was fun. The nurse told Meg that it might tickle a little when she brushed her teeth with the electric toothbrush.
Mother had already told Meg how important it was to have her teeth cleaned at the dentist’s office every six months so they would be strong and healthy. Dirty teeth become sick and decay. Mother told Meg she wanted her teeth to last her a long time. Meg did not mind having her teeth cleaned.
After Meg’s teeth were cleaned, Dr. Pat came in to look at her teeth to make sure she didn’t have any holes in them. If a dentist finds a hole in a tooth, he has to fill it up so it doesn’t hurt when you chew. Mother makes sure Meg brushes every day after meals so her teeth do not get holes in them.
Dr. Pat told Meg that she was doing a fine job brushing her teeth and he gave her a new toothbrush. Meg jumped down from the chair and ran out to tell Mother the good news.
Now it was Ben’s turn. Ben asked the nurse why she had a mask on her face. She told him that it was important that she not give germs to him and that she didn’t want to catch a cold from the people who came to see her every day. The mask helps protect her and the other people from colds, flu, and other sicknesses. Ben was glad he asked.
The nurse brushed Ben’s teeth and Dr. Pat came in to check them. “Ben, you have been doing a fine job brushing your teeth every day. I am happy to say that you do not have any holes in your teeth. Keep up the good work and remember to brush your teeth even when you are tired or in a hurry,” said Dr. Pat.
Do you brush your teeth every day?
On the way home, Mother stopped at the pet store to look at fish, but she told Ben and Meg she did not want to buy fish today. She would have to go home and think and plan for it. After all, Chip was a lot to take care of and Mother wasn’t sure she wanted more pets yet.
Do you have pets? Who takes care of your pets?
