It is fall in Vermont and the leaves are beautiful. People come from all over to see the leaves. The colors are beautiful: red, yellow, and orange. Vermont has lots of trees and mountains to see.
Meg and Ben love to rake big piles of leaves and jump into them. Sometimes they play hide and seek in the piles of leaves. Daddy says they will have to burn the leaves soon, but he will let the children enjoy them for another week. Every afternoon Meg and Ben play in the leaves.
One day, Ben and Meg smelled smoke. At first they didn’t pay much attention, but then they saw smoke. Meg ran into the house to tell Mother. Mother saw flames shooting up in the air as she was coming out the door. She ran back into the house to call the fire department. Ben and Meg were scared. Have you ever seen a fire? It can be scary, don’t you agree?
The children down the road had tried to burn their leaves, but they had not gone about it in a safe way. They made a pile of leaves near an old wood shed and it caught on fire.
It was not long before the fire engine came and put out the fire. It sure was an exciting afternoon!
Most of the time Ben and Meg do not see fires. Fall is a wonderful time for them. When the leaves are blowing all around, they try to catch them. The air is crisp and they know that snow will soon be here. They have a lot of work to do to get ready for winter. A big truck delivers the wood every fall. Ben helps Daddy stack the wood. The pile of wood is so big they feel as if they will never finish stacking it before winter, but they always do. They have to be very careful to stack the wood so it will not fall over. Their garage has a little porch on the side for wood. Soon they will be carrying wood in every day for their wood stove. They have just a few more weeks of beautiful fall weather.
On the weekends, Mother, Daddy, Meg, Ben and Chip go for walks in the woods. They kick the leaves which smell so wonderful. If you want to see the leaves when they are the brightest, you should come to Vermont in the middle of October. Maybe you can visit Vermont some day.
