Is homeschooling legal?

During the past ten years, the right of parents to teach their children at home has been affirmed consistently by courts in many states, and most states provide some legal means for homeschooling. When you enroll in Oak Meadow, we communicate with your local school officials, if necessary, to insure that we conform to the legal requirements in your state.

Can my child graduate from Oak Meadow?

Students who complete the requirements for graduation from Oak Meadow School receive a high school diploma and may take the Scholastic Aptitude Test and apply for admission to colleges of their choice. Oak Meadow students have attended a variety of colleges and universities, including local community colleges, state universities and private colleges.

If I teach my children at home, will they keep up with their peers?

In numerous research studies conducted during the past ten years, homeschooled children have scored above their peers on a variety of measures, including academic achievement, self-concept and creativity. In another study, students who were homeschooled for several years were found to be more self-sufficient and less influenced by their peers.

Will my child's work at Oak Meadow transfer to other schools?

As we are fully accredited, all credits will transfer.

Do I have to have a teaching credential to homeschool my children?

You don't need a teaching credential to teach your children at home. Research studies have shown that the homeschooled student's success is not dependent upon the parent's educational background. From our own perspective, supported by the experiences of thousands of parents over the years, a warm, caring relationship and a sincere desire to help your children learn are much more important qualifications than your educational background.

What about my child's socialization?

Homeschooled children have ample opportunities for meaningful socialization with their peers through local clubs and classes, community activities, church involvement and personal relationships with friends. Many cities and towns also have homeschooling support groups that meet regularly to provide additional opportunities. In a nationwide study, Wesley Taylor of Andrews University found that homeschooled children scored significantly higher than their conventionally-schooled peers on a measure of self-concept, which is generally considered to reflect socialization. Dr. Taylor concluded that the socialization issue "favors homeschoolers over the conventionally-schooled population."
