Intro/Circle Time Lesson 4

CIRCLE TIME

Morning Verse:
I stand erect between earth and sky
My head rests on my shoulders high
The circling air blows in on me
My feet are firm, my hands are free
My heart will feel what is good and true
My head will plan what my hands will do
Movement Verse:
Sugar Camp Let us go to the sugar camp while the snow lies on the ground
Live in the birch-bark wigwam, all the children and the older folk
While the people are at work

Cut a notch in the maple tree, set a pail on the ground below
Soon the sap will be flowing, from the tree it will be flowing.
All the people are at work.

Make a fire in the sugar lodge so that we may boil the sap.
Soon the sap will be flowing, from the tree it will be flowing.
All the people are at work.

In the snow see the rabbit tracks, hear the note of the chick-a-dee.
We must not stop to follow them, tis’ the season of the sugar camp.
All the people are at work.

Bring the sap from the maple trees, pour the sap in the iron pot.
See how it steams and bubbles. May we have a taste of it?
All the people are at work.

Pour the syrup in the graining trough. Stir it slowly as it thicker grows.
Now it has changed to sugar. We may eat it in the birchbark dish.
There is sugar for us all.

This verse, based on a Chippewa melody, describes the Chippewa tribes method for making maple syrup in the spring. It can be chanted with a strong rhythm. Add gestures to describe the activity. This is particularly nice when followed by maple candy!

Closing Verse:

May my hands work with care
    My heart work with love
And my mind work with attention
