Biology with Lab
This course helps students build success in science. The text is friendly and accessible, with abundant photos and technical illustrations. The 50 labs and activities included in the course develop a range of important science skills in data collection, modeling, and exploration (a Lab Kit is available from Oak Meadow). The following books are included with this course:
Oak Meadow Biology Syllabus Biology (Holt)
AP Biology
AP Biology is a year-long course taught at the same level as a first-year college biology class. This course adheres closely to the College Board standards for AP Biology, and will prepare students to take the AP Biology Exam. The two main goals of this course are to help students develop a framework for biology and to help them gain a deeper understanding of science as a process. In this course, higher-level scientific thinking is developed rather than just memorizing terms and facts.
Biology: Concepts and Connections (Benjamin Cummings)
Environmental Science
This course introduces fundamental ecological concepts and explores the interactions within ecosystems. Students learn about the biosphere, major biomes, ecosystems, chemical cycles, and the role of living things in ecosystems. In addition to learning about environmental problems such as land, water and air pollution, overpopulation, and habitat destruction, students explore practical alternatives for protecting the environment and moving toward a sustainable future. The following books are included with this course:
Oak Meadow Environmental Science Syllabus Environmental Science(Holt)
AP Environmental Science
This course is designed to acquaint you with the physical, ecological, social, and political principles of environmental science. The scientific method is used to analyze and understand the interrelationships between humans and the natural environment. The course shows how ecological realities and the material desires of humans often clash, leading to environmental degradation and pollution. The course consists of six chapters covering the following topics: Earth’s Systems; Human Population Dynamics; Natural Resources; Environmental Quality; Global Changes; and Environment and Society. Chapters are divided into several subsections, each of which contains text, animations, laboratory simulations, and video presentations by experts.
Environmental Science (Brooks Cole)
Chemistry with Lab
Chemistry is the study of matter through observation and experimentation. In this course, students get a rigorous hands-on introduction to the tools, terms, and practices of the study of Chemistry. Newly designed and rewritten by one of our Oak Meadow science teachers, the course syllabus includes 36 engaging and thought-provoking lessons, affording students a chance to read, write, and reflect on chemistry principles and their real-world applications. The course features 32 laboratory activities, ranging from simple calculations and graphs to full-featured experiments with solutions, gases, and electrochemical cells. These activities employ standard household items, while more specialized tools and substances are provided in the included Oak Meadow Lab Kit. This course fulfills all the standards of a college-preparatory Chemistry course. The following materials are included with this course:
Oak Meadow Chemistry Syllabus
Oak Meadow Chemistry Lab Workbook
Oak Meadow Chemistry Lab Kit
Chemistry (Prentice Hall)
The Joy of Chemistry (Prometheus Book)
AP Chemistry
Advanced Placement Chemistry is equivalent to a full-year introductory college course in general chemistry. Students will learn fundamental analytical skills to logically assess chemical problems proficiently. Through fascinating and elaborative lessons, students will develop the skills necessary to arrive at conclusions based on informed judgment and present evidence in clear and persuasive essays.
Chemistry: The Molecular Nature of Matter and Change (McGraw-Hill)
Physics
This course combines traditional physics instruction with modern quantum theories of the nature of the universe. The subject is taught at an introductory level, which will allow the average student to grasp the concepts of Newton’s laws, statics, dynamics, thermodynamics, optics, DC circuits, waves, electromagnetics, and special relativity. The following books are included with this course:
Oak Meadow Physics Syllabus
Physics (Saxon)
Coming of Age in the Milky Way (Harper)
AP Physics
B Physics is the science of matter and energy—how the universe is put together. This course is a noncalculus survey course covering five general areas: Newtonian mechanics; thermal physics; electricity and magnetism; waves and optics; and atomic and nuclear physics. Students will get an understanding of the core principles involved and learn to apply these principles in the solution of problems.
