CURRICULUM: ONLINE HIGH SCHOOL COURSES

Note: You may choose to follow the typical course selection outlined below; or, depending upon your home state and personal preferences, you may wish to enroll in these courses during different years. Some courses do have prerequisites, however, which are listed below.

Ninth Grade
English 9

This course offers a skills-centered introduction to the elements of literature, using a range of classic and modern reading selections to illustrate each concept. Organized into twelve “collections” of short stories, poems, articles, and novel excerpts, the text focuses on literary concepts such as plot, setting, character, and symbolism. Later units feature genres such as poetry, biography, and drama. In each lesson, contemporary essays and introductory readings help illustrate the major themes.

U.S. History

The textbook The American Vision encourages critical thinking, integrates history with geography, as well as making social and cultural connections. The full panorama of American history comes alive through vivid and accurate re-telling, and National Geographic maps add dimension to the narrative and give students an understanding of the interrelationships of places and events. The course covers pre-Colonial North America up through the beginning of the 21st century and the War in Iraq.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1, containing fourteen chapters in five units of study, introduces the basics of equations, functions, and statistics. Beginning with real numbers and variables, the course covers linear and quadratic equations, graphing on a coordinate plane, polynomials, and radical functions. The final unit focuses on the techniques of statistical analysis. Key Concepts are presented in words, symbols and models, or examples to enhance students’ understanding.

Biology

Holt Biology is the result of the latest developments in biology and the teaching of biology, with complete content emphasized throughout. Students get the thorough, accurate explanations and instructions they need to develop a solid foundation in the fundamentals. Advanced students find challenge in the depth of open-ended activities and critical-thinking questions. The course covers fundamental concepts in biology including genetics, the theory of evolution, ecology and biodiversity. Later units focus on the major forms of life on Earth, including plants, vertebrates and invertebrates, and human biology.

Tenth Grade
English 10

The text is organized into eleven “collections” of short stories, poems, articles, and novel excerpts, each devoted to a major aspect of literary analysis such as plot, voice, theme, and style. Later units feature genres such as poetry, biography, and drama. In each lesson, contemporary essays and introductory readings help illustrate the major themes.

World History

Glencoe World History, a comprehensive course that covers prehistory to the present day, helps link the events of the past with the issues that confront students today. It motivates and engages students in meaningful learning as they develop an understanding of the world’s cultures and an appreciation for the interdependence of world regions.

Geometry

Geometry, containing thirteen chapters in four units of study, covers elemental geometric concepts from the lowly point through three-dimensional volumes. Students will practice writing proofs, testing for congruence, and calculating probabilities. Course lessons also focus on symbolic logic, basic trigonometric functions, and transformations.
Prerequisite: Algebra 1

Environmental Science

This course challenges students to think for themselves with thorough and unbiased coverage of environmental and Earth science, as well as ecology, health, and policy topics. The course will focus individually on each of the components of our environment, including air, water, land, and energy resources. Units of study are also devoted to the dynamics of human populations, ecological concerns, and environmental policy.

Eleventh Grade
English 11

The text Essentials of American Literature uses the major movements and periods in American history as a backdrop for exploring the historical and cultural influences on literature, incorporating myth, politics, and emerging styles. Organized into six “collections” by historical period, the course presents short stories, poems, essays and novel excerpts that illustrate the issues and cultural attitudes of the time. Students will examine the way the American literary voice has developed, from early colonial writing and oral tradition through modern fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

U.S. Government

The text United States Government: Democracy in Action encourages critical thinking, emphasizes key government concepts, and relates the institutions of government to everyday life. Beginning with several lessons on the historical foundations of our democracy, the course then focuses a unit of study on each of the major branches of government: Legislative, Executive, and Judicial. Later units focus on state and local government, public services, and alternative political systems in countries throughout the modern world.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2, containing fourteen chapters in five units of study, begins with linear equations and inequalities, covers polynomials, logarithms, and statistics, and concludes with trigonometric functions and graphs. Students will practice on real-world examples and study technological applications.

Chemistry

Holt Chemistry presents the fundamentals of chemistry in twenty engaging chapters. Crucial content is developed progressively throughout the program. For example, the atom is presented in an "inside out" approach – from atoms to the Periodic Table, to bonding, to molecules and reactions, and so on. The course also connects the material to its historical basis, current research, and modern applications.

Twelfth Grade
English 12

The text Essentials of British and World Literature uses the history of Great Britain as a backdrop for exploring major literary works from around the world. Organized into seven “collections” by historical period, the course begins with early Anglo-Saxon literature and mythic epics, tracing the development of English literature to the modern era. In each lesson, concepts and genres are compared across cultures, including Indian myth, Chinese poetry, and South American fiction. Throughout all lessons, students will read selections from seminal works of British literature.

World Geography

Glencoe World Geography presents a clear and comprehensive coverage of geography, encourages active learning, and introduces the tools and technologies used by geographers. The course is organized into eleven units by geographic region, with individual lessons on each region’s physical and cultural geography, and its place in the modern world. Throughout the course, students learn how geography has affected historical events in various regions of the world, and Case Studies provide opportunities to discuss the environmental challenges facing the world’s regions.

Physics

A comprehensive physics course that takes a step-by-step approach to problem solving, Holt Physics strikes a balance between theoretical, mathematical models and concrete, real-world examples. The course includes discussions of major scientific developments throughout history, real-world applications and examples, experimental technology, and current theoretical physics.

Lifetime Health

Lifetime Health provides up-to-date information about health and wellness issues and presents it in a readable, student-friendly format. Fundamentals of health, such as self-esteem, abstinence, and drugs, alcohol and tobacco, are covered with an emphasis on responsible decision-making.
